AUSTIN — Patrick Prince raced to a berth in the 110-meter hurdles quarterfinals on Friday to highlight UTSA's second day of action at this weekend's NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.
Prince clocked a 13.87 en route to third place in the first of six opening-round heats. The sophomore from Conroe earned an automatic berth by placing in the top three and his time was good for 13th in the field of 46 hurdlers. The quarters are scheduled for 7:20 p.m. on Saturday and the top three finishers in each of the three heats along with the next three fastest times will advance to the national semifinals in Eugene, Ore.
Four other Roadrunners competed on Friday but none were able to move on to the next round.
Randy Bermea just missed a spot in the national semifinals when raced to a season-best time of 51.01 in the 400m hurdles. The senior from Harlingen placed 13th in the field of 24 hurdlers, but only the top 12 advanced to the semis.
"I'm glad I could walk away today knowing I left it all on the track," Bermea said. "I wanted to run well for everyone that has supported me throughout the years and I think I did that today after an injury-filled season. I'm glad I went down swinging and I loved every minute of being a Roadrunner. I am nothing but blessed and grateful for the career I had."
Meanwhile, Vasha Sheriff was unable to qualify for the semifinals in the 400m after clocking a 46.86, which ranked 24th among the quarterfinalists.
In field event action, Tyler Finke registered a measurement of 56-0 (17.07m) in the shot put, but he saw his senior campaign come to an end after finishing 30th in the field of 47 throwers and Barrett Brock did not clear a height in pole vault and his senior season also came to an end.
The three-day meet will conclude on Saturday.
