BILOXI, Miss. — No. 11 Southern Miss ended UTSA's season with a 7-1 decision on Friday night in an elimination game in the Conference USA Tournament at MGM Park.
Geonte Jackson, who pinch ran for Trent Bowles in the ninth, scored the Roadrunners' only run of the game on C.J. Pickering's RBI single.
UTSA (29-28) totaled nine hits on the night with the bottom of the order registering six. Jesse Baker, Mason George and Tony Beam each posted two hits.
Southern Miss starter Taylor Braley was an inning shy of going the distance. He struck out nine batters and did not allow a run or walk for the win.
Before UTSA scored its run in the ninth, the Roadrunners threatened in the eighth after three consecutive hits loaded the bases. However, Braley struck out the next two batters and the inning came to an end after George was tagged at third.
The Golden Eagles (46-13) scored their seven runs through the first five innings with multiple runs in the fourth and fifth.
Southern Miss scored in the opening stanza with a run on Matt Wallner's RBI fielder's choice and another run in the second on Dylan Burdeaux's RBI double. The hit was Burdeaux's 100th of the season and he became the seventh player in program history to do so in a single season.
UTSA southpaw Nolan Trabanino was charged with the loss in his 4.1 innings of work. He allowed seven runs on nine hits, walked four and struck out another four.
Southern Miss now will face Charlotte at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
