CORPUS CHRISTI — Gabriel Borunda and Juri Reckow each won in singles, but it was not enough in a 5-2 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (12-7) got out to a 1-0 lead by coming out on top in a close contest for the doubles point.
The UTSA duo of Patrick Poestinger and Reckow gave the visitors an early advantage by posting a 6-4 win against Kevin Bettendroffer and William Mottet at No.1.
However. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi evened things when Gonzalo Achondo and Carlos Pedrosa outlasted Kai Breitbach and Christian Carrillo, 7-5, at No. 3.
Lukas Buth and Cagatay Soke then provided the clincher with a 7-5 win against Fabian Brand and Takeru Watanabe at the middle of the lineup.
In singles, Mottet gave the home side a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Poestinger at No. 3.
Paul Cook made it 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Axel Cronje at No. 4.
UTSA pulled to within 3-2 with its two singles victories.
Borunda won for the third time during the dual-match season with a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Achondo at No. 6.
Reckow then collected his sixth victory of his freshman campaign with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Soke at No. 2.
The Islanders secured the match at center court when Bettendroffer scored a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory against Breitbach.
The Roadrunners (5-15) will return to action on Saturday, April 8, when they face UT Arlington.
