Bertschy, Prince win titles on final day of Roadrunners Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Monty Bertschy (1,500m) and Patrick Prince (110m hurdles) both registered first-place performances on Sunday to lead the UTSA men's track & field team on the final day of this weekend's Roadrunners Invitational at the Park West Athletics Complex.

Bertchy stopped the clock at 3:58.90 on his way to his first career victory in the 1,500 meters. The junior from Boerne missed his career best by less than a half second (3:58.49) in topping the field of eight middle distance runners.

Meanwhile, Prince raced to a gold medal for the second consecutive week in the 110m hurdles. The reigning Conference USA Track Athlete of the Week crossed the finish line in a wind-aided time of 13.91 to top the field of 15 hurdlers. It marked the sophomore's third career triumph in his specialty event.

"This start to the outdoor season has been really good to me," Prince said. "I am trying to build off my indoor momentum. I just missed out making it to nationals, so I'm very hungry. I was blessed to be able to PR with a 13.88 last weekend. I was hoping to drop a 13.7 or lower with it being our last home meet, but I can't complain considering I hit so many hurdles. I have a goal to make it to nationals, so I'm working hard to get to where I need to be and this has been a great start to the season."

Randy Bermea added a runner-up finish in the 400m hurdles with his time of 52.32. Baylor's Antwuan Musgrove edged UTSA's senior by just five one-hundredths of a second (52.27).

The Roadrunners also received five bronze-medal efforts on the meet's final day of action.

All-American Ty Anderson cleared 6-8 ¾ (2.05m) in the high jump, Mikael Dawkins peeled off a 10.63 in the 100m, Kaylon Sellers leaped to a career-best measurement of 24-5 (7.44m) in the long jump, Vasha Sheriff circled the oval in a personal-record 46.45 (third-best performance in program history) in the 400m and the 400m relay clocked a 40.09.

Texas A&M captured the team title with 231 points, while the Roadrunners were second with their 147.5 and Akron rounded out the top three with 114 points.

"I thought we competed very well against some great competition this weekend," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox said. "We saw a lot of very fast times today and this was a fun meet to host. We are off to a great start to the season and I am looking forward to next week's Texas Relays and beyond."

UTSA will return to action next week at the Clyde Litttlefield Texas Relays. The four-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, March 29.
