HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Rylee Rodriguez hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season, but Shaelynn Braxton homered twice to lead Marshall to a 9-3 victory in Sunday's series finale at Dot Hicks Field.
Celeste Loughman tied a season high by going 3-for-4 to pace the Roadrunners (9-15, 0-3 C-USA). The freshman recorded her fifth game of at least three hits, while classmate Lindsey Stewart notched her second triple of the campaign.
The Thundering Herd (17-4, 3-0 C-USA) started quickly and the home squad jumped out to an 8-0 lead through four innings. Marshall got a three-run homer from Braxton in the first and a solo shot in the third before a four-spot in the fourth.
UTSA bounced back with all three of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Angelica Niño started the frame with a bunt single and she raced home on Stewart's triple to left-center field. Two batters later, Rodriguez crushed the second pitch of her at-bat over the wall in left for a two-run blast to make it 8-3.
However, that was all the offense that the Roadrunners managed against Jordan Dixon, who moved to 12-4 with the victory.
Marshall tacked on a run in the sixth and Dixon shut the door in the seventh to seal the 9-3 win.
UTSA will return to the diamond at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, when it will travel to Waco for a matchup at No. 15 Baylor (21-4).
