Roadrunners off to solid start through season's opening four meets

SAN ANTONIO — With the Conference USA Indoor Championships scheduled for next weekend, the UTSA men's track & field team is poised to make another run at a league title if the current conference standings are any indication.

The Roadrunners, who checked in at a season-high 10th place in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Regional rankings, currently boast three athletes that sit atop the circuit's rankings.

Patrick Prince owns a season-best time of 7.86 in the 60-meter hurdles, a mark that also ranks 18th nationally and fourth in the South Central Region. The clocking, which came in a second-place finish at last weekend's Armory Invitational, is the fastest time of his two-year career and it stands third on the program's all-time performers chart.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Benoit's leads the conference in the shot put with his season-best measurement of 57-9 ¾ (17.61m), which also ranks fourth in the region, and Adrian Riley is UTSA's other league leader with his 4,951-point heptathlon performance that came two weeks ago at the Houston Invitational.

The Roadrunners also boast three marks that rank second in the league, as Alex Cruz (5k/14:54.79), Victor Perez (weight throw/UTSA record 64-5/19.63m) and Vasha Sheriff (400m/47.75). Cruz's time, which was recorded last weekend in New York City, ranks fifth in the South Central Region.

Two individuals and both of UTSA's relays sit in third place on the conference leaderboard.

Davante Edwards (6-8 ¾/2.05m) and Jacob McDaniel (heptathlon/4,455 points) are on pace for a bronze medal, while the 1,600m relay (3.11.97/No. 3 UTSA history) and distance medlay relay (10:11.20) own the circuit's third-best times this winter.

The Roadrunners, who are coming off last weekend's third-place team finish at the Armory Invitational, will have their final tune-up for next weekend's conference meet at Friday's Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.
