Roadrunners drop a pair on second day of UTSA Classic

SAN ANTONIO — Rylee Rodriguez extended her hitting streak to 11 games on Saturday, but UTSA dropped a pair of games on the second day of this weekend's UTSA Classic to New Mexico (5-4) and Texas State (8-1) at Roadrunner Field.

Hailey Garza went 5-for-6 at the plate, including a 3-for-3 outing in game one, to help pace the Roadrunners offense. Lindsey Stewart and Celeste Loughman also had three hits apiece, while Lizzy Fox saw her streak without an earned run allowed end at 19.2 innings.

In the opener, the Lobos (6-8) rallied for four runs in the final two innings to come back and top UTSA, 5-4.

The Roadrunners (5-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, Bailee Baldwin stole second and moved to third on the first of three hits in the contest from Garza. Garza went to second on a throw home and Taylor Oberg plated Baldwin with a single up the middle. Angelica Niño then pushed Garza across with an infield single to cap the inning.

New Mexico got a run back in the top of the third, but UTSA extended its lead to 4-1 with two more runs in the fifth.

A Lobos error started the inning and the miscue was followed by singles from Stewart and Loughman to load the bases for Rodriguez. The freshman extended her hitting streak to 10 games with her sixth double of the campaign to bring two home.

However, New Mexico knotted the score with three runs in the sixth and picked up the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh.

The Roadrunners got the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning when Loughman punched a single to left field, but she was left stranded as the Lobos took the 5-4 final.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats (9-2) hit four home runs to score an 8-1 win over the Roadrunners.

Taylor Webb's solo blast in the second gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead that ballooned to 4-0 an inning later when Ariel Ortiz hit a three-run shot.

UTSA got on the board in the bottom of the third. Stewart opened the inning with a single and stole second before a Rodriguez single to left pushed her hitting streak to 11 games and put runners on the corners. Randee Crawford then lined a single the opposite way to plate Stewart and pull the Roadrunners within 4-1.

However, Texas State got another three-run homer, this time off the bat of Jaelyn Young in the fifth, and she added a solo shot in the seventh for an 8-1 lead.

UTSA will close tournament play with a 12:30 p.m. contest on Sunday against Incarnate Word (4-9). The Cardinals downed the Roadrunners by a score of 5-4 on Friday night.
