No. 23 Baylor rallies past UTSA on Sunday to close Getterman Classic on Sunday

WACO — Rylee Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a homer and a pair of RBIs, but No. 23 Baylor rallied for four runs in the final two innings to slip past UTSA, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon in the finale of this weekend's Getterman Classic.

Rodriguez, who was named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team, hit .429 (6-for-14) with three runs scored, a double and a homer over the weekend to help lead the Roadrunners (2-5).

Randee Crawford also drove in a pair of runs with a double against the Bears (7-3), while Nicole Merrill struck out three in 5.1 innings of work.

Meanwhile, the top third of the lineup paced Baylor by going 8-for-12 (.667) with a double, three RBIs and four runs scored. Shelby McGlaun tossed a scoreless 2.1 innings in relief to improve to 1-1 on the season.

UTSA turned three Baylor errors into three runs in the top of the first for a quick advantage.

Celeste Loughman reached on a fielder's choice and swiped second base before Bailee Baldwin's walk. Crawford then brought both runners home with a double to the gap in left-center for a 2-0 lead. The senior moved to third on the second error of the inning and she scored following another fielding error to cap the big inning.

However, the Bears stormed back in the bottom of the frame with three consecutive singles and a walk to get on the board. A UTSA error then allowed two runners to score and knot the game at 3-all.

Both starters recovered for a scoreless second inning, but Rodriguez gave the Roadrunners the lead in the third with a solo homer to left. The blast, which was her second of the season, came with two outs on a 1-2 offering from Baylor starter Gia Rodoni.

UTSA would tack on two more runs in the fifth and chase Rodoni from the contest to build a 6-3 lead.

Erica Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly to plate one run in the inning before Taylor Oberg's two-out single to left brought home another.

However, the Bears again erased a three-run deficit with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth and Lindsey Cargill's single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh plated the winning run.

UTSA will return to the diamond for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Sam Houston State (2-4).
