WACO — No. 23 Baylor jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and got 10 strikeouts from Kelsee Selman en route to a 5-0 victory against visiting UTSA on Thursday night in the opening game of the Getterman Classic.
Randee Crawford and Rylee Rodriguez each notched hits for the Roadrunners (1-3), while Lizzy Fox picked up a strikeout in six innings of work.
Meanwhile, Kyla Walker went 3-for-3 with a run scored to help pace the Bears (4-2) on offense. Selman improved to 2-1 with her 10 Ks in five innings in the circle.
The Bears opened the game with three consecutive singles for a quick 2-0 lead. The advantage doubled to 4-0 two batters later on Ari Hawkins' two-run homer to center field.
Selman kept the UTSA offense off balance and did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth.
The Roadrunners had their best scoring chance in the top of the sixth, when Taylor Oberg walked and went to second on a wild pitch that ended Selman's night. Angelica Niño followed with a walk against reliever Gia Rodoni to put a pair on with nobody out.
But Rodoni notched back-to-back strikeouts and it was ruled that a runner left early for the third out of the inning.
The Bears tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning and Rodoni kept the Roadrunners off the board in the seventh to complete the 5-0 win.
UTSA will continue tournament play at 12:30 p.m. on Friday when it will face Lamar (2-3).
