SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season in a 7-0 shutout of Prairie View A&M on Wednesday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (1-1) made quick work of the Panthers (0-2) in doubles to grab an early lead in their home opener.
Fabian Brand and Igor Cantanhede posted a 6-1 win against Serghio Avella and Anirudh Yadav at No. 1 doubles. Leon Hein and Takeru Watanabe then dispatched Ulrick Boyogueno and Xavier Lawrence by a 6-2 count on court two to clinch the 1-0 advantage for the home side.
In singles, UTSA posted four straight-set victories en route to improving to 7-0 all-time against Prairie View A&M.
Axel Cronje took care of Lawrence with a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 3, and that was followed shortly by a 6-1, 6-2 triumph by Cantanhede of Freddy Quintero at No. 4.
The Roadrunners clinched the win when Kai Breitbach downed Avella, 6-2, 6-4 at the top of the lineup for a 4-0 lead.
Hein registered a 6-3, 6-4 win against Zachary Suico at No. 6, but the final two singles matches went to a super tiebreaker.
On court two, Watanabe rallied from a 6-4 setback in the opening set against Yadav for a 6-0 blanking to force the super, which he won, 11-9.
At No. 5, Patrick Poestinger outlasted Boyogueno, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9), to complete the shutout for UTSA.
The Roadrunners will travel across town to face Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. on Saturday before hosting UTRGV at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
