UTSA gets past UTEP in five sets on Sunday

EL PASO — UTSA lost its second consecutive early lead but made up ground in the deciding set and the Roadrunners defeated UTEP in five sets on Sunday (25-22, 25-21, 14-25, 21-25, 15-10).

The win marks the Roadrunners' ninth straight win and moves UTSA to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA, while UTEP drops to 3-12 and 0-3 in league action.

Dajana Boskovic led the way for UTSA as she registered a match-high 22 kills with 11 digs and five blocks. Antonela Jularic and Marijeta Runjic added 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while Jularic also picked up her second double-double of the weekend with 13 digs.

Meanwhile, Jessica Waldrip notched 50 assists with eight digs and a pair of service aces.

The defense was spread out among the team with four Roadrunners reaching double figure digs. Shelby Williams paced the quartet with 18 digs.

What looked like a repeat of Friday's match against North Texas, UTSA took the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.

UTEP picked up the pace in the third set and held the Roadrunners to its lowest hitting percentage of the day with a .023 clip and won 25-14.

The Miners went ahead and evened the match in the fourth stanza with a 25-21 victory. The Roadrunners played from behind the entire way despite a tie at the 12-all mark when UTSA used a 5-0 run to even the score. The Miners pulled away to a lead that would hold the rest of the frame.

UTSA turned things around in the fifth set and jumped out to an 8-1 lead before UTEP could score again. The Roadrunners managed to hold off the Miners for the match win.

The Roadrunners will continue with its three-match road swing when the team travels to Huntington, W.Va., for its only match of the week against Marshall on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 12 p.m.
