Boskovic’s career day leads UTSA past Wichita State in Roadrunners Roundup finale

SAN ANTONIO — Dajana Boskovic went for a career high 31 kills to lead UTSA to a five-set victory (25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-10) on Saturday afternoon in the Roadrunners Roundup finale at the Convocation Center.

Boskovic finished the day one dig shy of a double-double and earned her third tournament MVP honor of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Marijeta Runjic and Jessica Waldrip joined Boskovic on the all-tournament team. Runjic went for a 15-kill performance, while Waldrip picked up her fifth match of 40-plus assists with 51 and also collected her third double-double with 24 digs.

The win extended the Roadrunners' win streak to six, which upped their record to 9-3.

Wichita State (7-4) had four players reach double figures and was led by Mikaela Raudsepp's 17 kills and three blocks. Emily Heibert (51 assists, 18 digs) and Abbie Lehman (12 kills, two blocks) were two of the Shockers players to earn all-tournament honors as well.

The Roadrunners kept serving errors to a minimum against WSU racking up just six, which is the second lowest total this season.

After opening up the match with a 25-21 win in the first set, UTSA dropped the next two stanzas by scores of 25-20 and 25-21.

UTSA was able to turn things around in the fourth set as the team hit a .500 clip and held the Shockers to a .167 attack percentage. The Roadrunners did not commit an error in the final sets of the match.

Four early ties would be the last time Wichita State would be in reach of controlling the match against the Roadrunners in the fourth but UTSA used a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. The Roadrunners eventually used another lengthy run and even led by as many as 10 at the 22-12 mark on a block assist by Kara Teal and Jessica Waldrip.

The Roadrunners came out strong in the deciding set and jumped out to an early 4-2 lead.  UTSA eventually doubled up Wichita State to switch courts and later used three straight kills from Marijeta Runjic to hold an 11-6 advantage. Fittingly, Boskovic secured the win for UTSA with her 31st kill of the match.

UTSA will open Conference USA play next weekend when it hosts Southern Miss at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.
