NORMAN, Okla. — UTSA took its second tournament title of the season at the Nike Invitational with a 25-27, 28-26, 25-20, 25-19 victory against Ohio on Saturday afternoon at McCasland Field House.
UTSA (6-3) posted its second consecutive match with a .300 or better attack percentage with a .356 clip and had three Roadrunners earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Dajana Boskovic was named MVP while Marijeta Runjic and Tessa Dahnert join Boskovic on the all-tournament team.
Boskovic collected her fourth match this season, and second of the weekend, of 20-plus kills with 20 and added 11 digs (fourth double-double) and four blocks. Meanwhile, Runjic shined for UTSA with a match-high 23 kills and hit a season-best .656.
Senior setter Jessica Waldrip had another great performance with 43 assists, four kills, five digs and four blocks.
UTSA's slow start in the opening set was taken back as the Roadrunners won the last three sets.
Ohio (3-7) used a 6-0 run in the first to lead the Roadrunners 12-6, but UTSA later a made a comeback and had both teams trading points until a tie at 25. A bad set by UTSA followed by a kill by the Bobcats closed out the frame.
The second set was another close game as it featured 17 ties with six lead changes. The set went back-and-forth, and even had Ohio with set point at 24-20, but the Roadrunners rallied and went on a 5-0 run to lead 25-24. The Bobcats evened the score at 25-all and then again at 26-all but back-to-back kills from Runjic and Boskovic secured the win.
UTSA was at ease in the third set as they played ahead of the Bobcats the entire way to win 25-20 but the fourth set had the Roadrunners playing from behind halfway through.
A 7-0 run propelled the Roadrunners past the Bobcats to a 17-13 advantage after Ohio held the 13-10 lead. UTSA held off Ohio the rest of the way for the victory.
Ohio had three players reach double figures but were led by Jaime Koiorek with 21 kills.
UTSA will return to the Alamo City for its final regular season tournament of the year when it hosts the Roadrunners Roundup fron Sept. 15-17. The Roadrunners will welcome I-35 rival Texas State, Texas Tech and Wichita State.
