LAWRENCE, Kan. — Ty Anderson advanced to the national semifinals in the high jump with a career-best performance on Friday to highlight UTSA's second day of action at this weekend's NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.
Anderson cleared a personal-record 7-1 (2.16m) on his third and final attempt en route to finishing 10th in the field of 48 high jumpers. The sophomore from Luling opened the competition, which was moved indoors due to inclement weather, by clearing the opening measurement of 6-7 ½ (2.02m) on his initial try and he then got over the bar at both 6-9 ½ (2.07m) and 6-11 ½ (2.12m) on his second attempt before registering his career best. Anderson, who was coming off a fifth-place finish at the Conference USA Championships, now stands alone in second place on the Roadrunners' all-time performers chart.
"I'm really excited that I will be able to represent my school at the national meet," Anderson said. "I was able to make some big jumps when it counted today and hope that continues in two weeks."
Anderson will continue his pursuit to become the 14th All-American in program history at 7 p.m. (CT) on Friday, June 10, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Three other UTSA athletes competed on Friday, but they were unable to advance.
Randy Bermea finished 20th in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 51.95 and 2015 All-American Jurmarcus Shelvin did not finish. Meanwhile, Dusan Makevic placed 27th in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:11.72.
All running events were contested as quarterfinals after Thursday's opening day was suspended due to ongoing thunderstorms.
The three-day meet will conclude on Saturday. Kelsey Benoit (shot put), Justin Gerbrecht (110m hurdles) and Patrick Prince (110m hurdles) are scheduled to compete for the Roadrunners.
