Mile relay victory highlights UTSA's two days of action at Bobcats Classic

SAN MARCOS — UTSA's 1,600-meter relay was victorious for the second consecutive week and third time overall this season and that highlighted the Roadrunners' two days of action at this weekend's Bobcats Classic. The meet was the team's final tune-up for the Conference USA Championships.

The quartet of Kaylan Harris, Randy Bermea, Kyren Hollis and Vasha Sheriff passed the baton in a season-best 3:12.35 to easily win the final event of the meet. The peformance moved the Roadrunners into fourth place on the league leaderboard and it marked the squad's third gold medal in the past four outings.

Meanwhile, Justin Gerbrecht raced to a pair of personal bests in the hurdle events.

The sophomore from Houston clocked a 14.28 en route to fourth place in the 110m hurdles, but he finished as the top collegian. That performance moved him up to fifth place in the conference standings. Gerbrecht went on to place third in the 400m hurdles in 52.80, again as the top collegian, and he now sits in fourth place on the circuit's leaderboard. UTSA now has three of the top four performances in that event this spring (Jurmarcus Shelvin leads/Bermea is second).

"It felt great to double PR today," Gerbrecht said. "I think I am right where I need to be heading into the conference meet."

Tyler Finke added a fourth-place effort in the shot put with measurement of 55-5 (16.89m), which just missed his personal best by a mere half inch, and he now ranks third in the league. The junior from Celina also just missed a career best in the discus on Friday with his toss of 152-7 (46.50m).

Victor Perez had a season-best throw of 192-5 (58.64m) in the hammer and that moved him up to third place in the conference rankings.

UTSA will take next wekeend off before traveling to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the C-USA Championships, which are scheduled for May 12-15.
