Louisiana Tech downs UTSA twice on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — It took two days to complete the opening game of the series, but UTSA dropped a 4-2 decision and Louisiana Tech followed with a 14-9 victory in the second game on Saturday evening at Roadrunner Field.

Heavy rains passing through the San Antonio area halted Friday night's game in the top of the fourth with the Bulldogs leading, 4-2.

After the game picked up where it left off, the score remained the same the rest of the way. Karan Patel pitched the final 5.1 innings and did not allow a hit.

Aaron Burns was the pitcher of record after he allowed four runs early in the game.

Louisiana Tech (27-13, 12-8 C-USA) scored first with a run in the top of the third, but UTSA responded in the home half with a pair of runs to make it 2-1.

Bryan Arias blasted a two-out triple to right field and scored Skyler Valentine for the first score of the inning and Arias then crossed home plate on Tyler Straub's RBI ground out.

The Bulldogs came back in the following inning with three runs before the game was halted in the middle of Raphael Gladu's at-bat with a 1-1 count and two outs.

C.J. Pickering led the Roadrunners in the first game with a 3-for-4 performance. Valentine was the only other Roadrunner with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-5 with a run, triple and stolen base.

In the second game of the day, Louisiana Tech scored twice in the first inning and held the Roadrunners (14-27, 5-15 C-USA) scoreless through four until Valentine hit a two-out solo home run over the wall in left field.

The Bulldogs added multiple runs in the fourth through seventh innings for a total of 14 in the contest.

UTSA scored once in the sixth on Jason Serchay's RBI single before exploding for seven runs in the ninth.

The Roadrunners batted around in the inning and were led off by Johnny Whalen's first at-bat of the season. An infield single started off the rally and, six hits later, Whalen ended the hitting parade with a double to right center.

George, Pickering, Straub and Whalen each had two hits for the Roadrunners.

UTSA will look to avoid the sweep at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
