UTSA to return to action at this weekend's Bobcats Classic

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will have its final tune-up for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships this weekend when it travels north to compete at the Bobcats Classic in San Marcos. The two-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Friday morning at the Bobcats Track & Field Stadium on the campus of Texas State University.

Two events will be contested on the opening day of the meet with the javelin scheduled for 10 a.m. and the discus three hours later. All the remaining disciplines will take place the following day beginning at 8 a.m. (click here for the complete meet schedule) and the Roadrunners will face athletes from Colorado State, Incarnate Word, Our Lady of the Lake, Michigan, North Texas, SMU, South Florida, Southwestern Christian, Texas, Texas-Rio Grande Valley, Texas A&M, Texas Lutheran, Texas Wesleyan and Trinity in addition to the host Bobcats.

Jurmarcus Shelvin and UTSA's 1,600-meter relay both won titles to pace the men at last weekend's Tritons Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. Shelvin clocked a 51.59 to easily top the 400m hurdles field and it marked the senior's second victory in four meets this season. Meanwhile, Kaylan Harris, Kyren Hollis, Shelvin and Andres Salazar picked up the Roadrunners' other gold medal at the two-day meet after they passed the baton in 3:15.57.

Shelvin (50.21/sixth) and Randy Bermea (50.56/10th) continue to rank among the top 10 nationally in the 400m hurdles, while decathlete Adrian Riley (7,190 points/21st) is the only other Roadrunner who ranks among the top 25 in country. UTSA sits atop the Conference USA standings in three events with Shelvin topping the 400m hurdles standings, Dusan Makevic leading the 3,000m steeplechase (8:52.86) and Levi Jordan pacing the discus (172-0/52.43m). All told, the Roadrunners have recorded a total of 10 marks that currently rank among the top three in the league this season.

The women's received a total of five podium finishes at last weekend's meet. Leading the way once again was the 1,600-meter relay, as the quartet of Sierra Andres, Jennifer Arinze, Syd Howells and Evelyn Clark passed the stick in 3:47.10 en route to second place (top collegiate team). UTSA has finished no worse than third in all six of its mile relay races this spring and it stands second in the conference standings with its top time of 3:39.01 this spring.

Angel Sifuentes continues to pace the circuit with her season-opening, program-record javelin throw of 147-2 (44.87m) and Stephanie Wangui also ranks among the top three with her 1,500m time of 4:28.15.
