Roadrunners snap losing skid with 6-0 victory against FIU on Friday night

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA snapped a six-game losing skid on Friday night with a 6-0 shutout against FIU at Roadrunner Field.

Aaron Burns worked 5.1 innings and scattered six hits, while Andre Shewcraft closed things out with 3.2 innings, giving up one hit, for the team’s first shutout of the season. Shewcraft also earned his first career save.

UTSA (11-14, 2-5 C-USA) outhit its opponent for the 12th time this season, 8-7, but it committed one miscue on the night.

Tyler Straub and Ryan Stacy had multiple hits on the night going 2-for-4, while Straub added a double and two RBIs.

The Roadrunners held FIU (13-16, 2-5 C-USA) off the board even when the Panthers threatened early in the third with bases loaded. A fly out and groundout ended the inning to keep the Panthers from scoring.

UTSA scored its six runs between the third and fifth innings.

Straub's two-run double in the third put the Roadrunners on the board. In the following frame, C.J. Pickering blasted his second homer of the season, a two-run shot that scored J.T. Gilmore. In the fifth, Gilmore doubled to score Mason George and Matt Hilston.

Zack Soria led FIU offensively by going 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.

The series will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
