UTSA to return to action at Saturday's Texas Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will return to action on Saturday at the Texas Invitational. The one-day meet is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

The Roadrunners will face a loaded field with athletes from Arkansas, Auburn, Iowa, LSU, Mississippi, Nebraska, Penn State, Stephen F. Austin and TCU scheduled to compete. Nine teams currently are ranked among the Top 25 on both the men's and women's side.

UTSA is coming off last weekend's Roadrunners Invitational, which was its third and final home meet of the spring.

The men won nine events and easily cruised to the team title and they now have four athletes that currently rank among the top 20 nationally in their respective events.

Leading the way is the 400-meter hurdles duo of Jurmarcus Shelvin and Randy Bermea. Shelvin stands in the fifth place with his personal-best time of 50.21 he registered three weeks ago at the Ricardo Romo Invitational, while Bermea is tied for eighth with his career-best clocking of 50.56, which came at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The pair owns the top two times in Conference USA this spring.

Adrian Riley is in 15th place in the decathlon standings. The sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, set a personal record with his 7,190 points at the Ricardo Romo Invitational, a performance that stands fifth on the Roadrunners' all-time chart. Riley currently ranks second in the league.

The Roadrunners' fourth top-20 performer is Dusan Makevic, who ranks 17th in the 3,000m steeplechase with his career-best and conference-leading time of 8:52.86.

UTSA athletes also can be found all over the C-USA standings. In addition to leading three events, Roadrunners also reside in second place in four disciplines and third in a half dozen events.

Meanwhile, Mia Hicks set a program record in the discus for the women last Saturday and UTSA won a total of seven events en route to the team crown at the two-day home meet.

Angel Sifuentes and UTSA's 1,600-meter relay sit atop the league leaderboard through the opening month of the outdoor campaign.

Sifuentes' season-opening, program-record measurement of 147-2 (44.87m) at the UTSA Invitational leads all conference performers, while the quartet of Jennifer Arinze, Shantel Swift, Evelyn Clark and Paige Patterson own a top time of 3:39.01, which came two weeks ago at the Texas Relays.
