Roadrunners to host Marshall this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will play its fourth Conference USA series of the season this weekend against Marshall. The three-game set will begin with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday and the final two tilts will take place at 2 p.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Roadrunners (11-17, 2-7 C-USA) have struggled to maintain leads late in games of late and they have allowed a combined 78 of their 190 runs in the seventh through ninth innings this spring.

UTSA is batting .271 as a team and is led offensively by outfielder Skyler Valentine. The Pearland native tops the team in hits (36), runs scored (23), total bases (52) and slugging percentage (.473). Meanwhile, Jason Serchay, who has found a groove as the team's designated hitter, owns a .303 average and is the only regular starter to have single-digit strikeouts.

Friday night starter Aaron Burns leads the Roadrunners pitching staff with a 4.07 ERA in eight starts. Burns is 3-2 on the season and has worked a staff-high 42 innings.

Marshall (15-12, 5-4 C-USA) will make the trek halfway across the country following Tuesday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to West Virginia. The Thundering Herd was plagued by errors that allowed the Mountaineers to come back in the 10th for the win. Marshall owns just three wins in 10 tries away from home this year.

Leading the way for the Herd is Tommy Lane. The junior checks in with a .324 batting average and he owns team bests in hits (36), home runs (8), RBIs (22), total bases (63) and slugging percentage (.568).

There will be an autograph session after the conclusion Sunday's finale.
