AUSTIN — UTSA dropped its first midweek contest of the season in an 11-2 decision at Texas on Tuesday night.
The Longhorns (9-12) went with a staff day, as seven pitchers saw action, including third baseman Kasey Clemens. However, reliever Nolan Kingham got the win following two innings of work.
Meanwhile, Andre Shewcraft was charged with the loss in two-thirds of an inning. Shewcraft gave up two runs on two hits with a pair of walks.
Trent Bowles picked up his third multiple-hit game of the year after going 2-for-3 with a triple and he scored the Roadrunners' only two runs. The top of the order racked up all six hits.
Through the first five innings, the score sat tied at two runs apiece, but Texas’ offense came alive in the sixth with eight runs.
Texas scored early with a run in the first, but UTSA (10-10) responded in the next inning with a run to tie the ballgame.
The Longhorns took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, but two innings later, UTSA tacked on a run to tie the score for the second time.
A fielding error by Texas in right field allowed for Bowles to score on Mason George’s team-leading eighth double of the campaign.
The eighth-run sixth propelled the Longhorns to 10-2 lead and they added another run in the eighth on Tres Barrera's solo home run to cap off the scoring.
UTSA will continue its road swing this weekend at Southern Miss. The three-game series is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
