LAREDO — Sean Meehan registered his second straight top-20 finish to lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a tie for eighth place at the Border Olympics, which wrapped on Saturday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).
Meehan tied for 19th with a 2-under-par 142 in the rain-shortened event. The freshman wrote down par on all 18 holes of his opening round, which was suspended on Friday afternoon due to heavy rain and finished on Saturday morning. The San Antonio Johnson High School product then posted a 2-under 70 in the final round on the strength of three birdies en route to his third top 20 of the season.
Zander Lozano was two shots behind Meehan in a tie for 29th at even-par 144. The sophomore posted four of his six birdies as part of a 71 in the first round and then turned in a 73 on Saturday afternoon.
J.J. Lindsey led all UTSA players with nine birdies, five coming in a 2-under 70 in the second round. The senior from Adkins opened with a 75 and finished in a tie for 40th at 1-over 145.
Brett Hogan and Bryce Alley rounded out the UTSA lineup in 61st (75-73—148) and 73rd (79-71—150), respectively, while Trace Morrow tied for 67th (76-73—149) as an individual.
The Roadrunners posted rounds of 293 and 284 to tie with Texas State for eighth place at 1-over 577. That pair was three shots behind Sacramento State (574) and two in front of Notre Dame (579) in the 17-team field.
No. 26 Baylor won the team title with a 20-under 556. No. 37 Houston was second with a 564, followed by Rice (567), Sam Houston State (569), Louisiana-Lafayette (569) and McNeese State (572).
Haraldur Magnus of Louisiana-Lafayette captured the individual crown with a 10-under 134 (66-68).
UTSA will return home to host the Lone Star Invitational on March 21-22 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio.
