Roadrunners upset 18th-ranked Houston on Tuesday night, 3-2

HOUSTON — UTSA used a combined effort on Tuesday night at No. 18 Houston for a 3-2 victory at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

The Roadrunners (6-2) sent the Cougars (4-4) to their fourth consecutive loss and it was their first win against Houston since winning a pair of games during the 2011 season.

Geonte Jackson picked up his second multiple-hit game of the season by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and walk.

Karl Craigie earned his first start of the season but received the no-decision. The southpaw logged 3.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits.

However, Andre Shewcraft, in his fifth relief appearance of the spring, picked up his second win of the year following 2.1 innings of work. Shewcraft gave up one run on two hits and struck out two.

Patrick Herbelin earned his second save with three innings of two-hit baseball.

For the first time this season, UTSA was on the board first after scoring a run in the second. Skyler Valentine led off the inning with a single to right and eventually made his way to third on a hit and a walk. Mason George grounded out to the second to plate Valentine.

The Roadrunners scored another run in the third before Houston got on the board in the home half of the frame. The Cougars threatened to score in the previous inning with the bases loaded, but a ground out to Craigie ended the inning.

UTSA scored its final run of the game in the fourth inning after Jackson tripled to lead off the inning. The senior first baseman then crossed home on George’s RBI single.

In the fifth, Houston got the wheels in motion but scored only one run while stranding two.

Houston’s Marshall Kasowski was charged with the loss in his 3.1 innings of action. The right-hander allowed all three runs on five hits with two walks.

UTSA will continue with its five-game road swing this weekend at UC Irvine (5-3). First pitch in Friday's opener is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (CT).
