Meehan, Alley guide UTSA to fifth place at Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. — Sean Meehan and Bryce Alley posted top-20 finishes to lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a fifth-place showing at the Louisiana Classics, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,898 yards).

Meehan tied for 13th and Alley finished in a tie for 19th to help the Roadrunners to their second top-five effort of the season, which also marked the program’s best showing at the tournament since placing fourth in 2002.

Meehan, a freshman from San Antonio Johnson High School, was UTSA’s top finisher for the second straight and third overall outing. He opened the 54-hole event with a season-best 6-under-par 66 and then followed with rounds of 74 and 77 in registering the second top-15 finish of his young collegiate career. Meehan posted a team-high 11 birdies en route to a 1-over 217.

Alley was two shots behind with a 218. The junior from Longview had a 75 in the final round after posting a 71 and 73 on Monday. He played the par fives at five under par and finished with 10 birdies en route to his fourth top-20 showing of the season.

Zander Lozano tied for 32nd after turning in a 71-74-77—222, while Brett Hogan tied for 39th (73-75-75—223) and J.J. Lindsey was 44th (75-71-78—224).

UTSA carded an 877 (281-292-304) to finish fifth, one shot behind Southeastern Louisiana (875) and one in front of Kent State (878).

Top-ranked Illinois captured the team title with an 849. No. 45 Kansas was second (850) behind individual medalist Ben Welle’s 7-under 209 (71-68-70) and No. 33 Texas A&M finished third (853).

UT Arlington placed seventh (881), followed by host Louisiana-Lafayette (886), Middle Tennessee (888), Texas State (895), Southern Miss (911) and Illinois State (915).

Competing as an individual, Trace Morrow finished in a tie for 39th (74-73-76—223).

The Roadrunners will return to the course in 10 days when they travel to Laredo for the Border Olympics. The two-day tournament is scheduled for March 11-12.
