SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's track & field team will return to action this weekend at the two-day Charlie Thomas Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station.
Athletes from Abilene Christian, Baylor, Clemson, Houston, Missouri, Rice, South Plains Junior College, TCU, UT Arlington and UTEP will join the Roadrunners and host Aggies.
Two events — the distance medley relay (6:45 p.m.) and 5,000 meters (7:25 p.m.) — will be contested on the opening day along with the first four events of the heptathlon (2:30 p.m.). The remainder of the events will take place beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with the final three events of the heptathlon. Running and field events will start two hours later.
Dusan Makevic was tabbed Conference USA Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after clocking a program-record 14:01.36 en route to a third-place finish in the 5k at last Saturday’s John Thomas Terriers Classic in Boston, Mass.
That broke the previous school standard of 14:36 that current distance coach David Hartman established back in 1995. The time not only leads C-USA, but it also currently ranks 12th in the nation. It shattered his former career-best of 14:46.05, registered during his sophomore season at Louisiana-Monroe, by nearly 45 seconds.
Makevic also sits atop the league leaderboard in the 3,000m (8:11.85) and UTSA's distance medley relay ranks first (10:10.04), giving the Roadrunners three conference-leading marks.
Meanwhile, Victor Perez (61-8 ¼/18.80m) and Gabe Vargas (57-7 ¾/17.57m) stand second in the conference in the weight throw and shot put, respectively, and the 1,600m relay team also ranks second (3:11.78). Jurmarcus Shelvin (47.76), Randy Bermea (48.13) and Va-Sheku Sheriff (48.20) own the third- through fifth-place performances and Shelvin also is fourth in the deuce (21.45).
