Roadrunners walk off with 6-5 victory against Connecticut on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — Ben Brookover blasted a first pitch RBI double down the right-field line to lead UTSA to a 6-5 victory against Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

Brookover pinch hit for Ryan Stacy in the seventh and came up huge in his second at-bat, as he finished 1-for-2 on the day with a double and RBI.

Catcher Mason George got the wheels moving in the ninth after he doubled to left center, his second extra base hit of the day. J.T. Gilmore followed with a single down the third-base line to put runners in scoring position and Brookover secured the win with his first hit of the season.

UTSA (2-0) registered three doubles on the day and outhit the Huskies, 10-9, and all but two Roadrunners registered at least one hit.

C.J. Pickering and George each had two hits on the day with Pickering scoring one run and George two.

Meanwhile, Geonte Jackson went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run. Jackson gave UTSA a 5-2 lead in the sixth on a 3-run homer after the score sat tied at two runs apiece.

Much like the season opener, both starting pitchers received the no decision.

Karan Patel made his collegiate debut and went 3.1 innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Patel struck out the side in the second inning picking up his fourth strikeout of the game.

Newcomer Karl Craigie earned the win after getting the final out of the ninth.

P.J. Poulin was charged with the loss after allowing one run on two hits.

The Huskies (0-2) drew blood first in the fourth, scoring back-to-back runs on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

The Roadrunners responded in the following inning with two runs of their own after Skyler Valentine scored the first run on Gilmore’s grounder to first. George scored on the next at-bat on Stacy’s single to left.

After Jackson gave UTSA the lead in the sixth, the Huskies slowly chipped away with runs in the seventh and eighth and they eventually tied things up in the ninth.

UTSA will go for the season-opening sweep at noon on Sunday.
