Marshall slips past UTSA in overtime on Friday night, 2-1

SAN ANTONIO — Sam Batley recorded her team-leading third goal of the season to give UTSA an early lead, but Marshall rallied with a goal in the second half and one in overtime to post a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.

Playing in their first home match since Aug. 23, the Roadrunners (1-9-1, 1-2 C-USA) were staked to an early lead when Harper Luczka and Makayla Schmidt combined to find Batley for a goal in the 38 minute. Coming off an 11-save outing in last Sunday’s win at Florida Atlantic, goalie Katherine Tesno recorded six stops in 94 minutes of action.

Meanwhile, Brittany Entz and Erin Simmons provided the scoring for the Thundering Herd (9-1-2, 2-0-1 C-USA), who extended their unbeaten streak to 11 matches. Additionally, goalie Lizzie Kish made a pair of saves on the night.

Batley opened the scoring with her strike past Kish in the 38th minute. Luczka slipped a pass to Schmidt, who then found Batley inside the six-yard box for the goal. The winner was the first allowed by Marshall since a Sept. 11 match against East Tennessee State.

UTSA took the 1-0 lead into halftime and the Thundering Herd nearly tied the score in the 51st minute. Simmons took a free kick just outside the penalty box and banged a shot off the crossbar that nearly bounced in before a UTSA defender cleared the ball.

However, Marshall was able to break through in the 59th minute to tie the score on Entz’s first goal of the season.

The match remained tied at the end of regulation and the Roadrunners went to overtime for the third time this fall.

Simmons cut the extra session short in the 95th minute when she rifled a shot from about 30 yards out into the back of the net for the game-winner.

UTSA will be back in action on Sunday at Park West Athletics Complex for a 1 p.m. match against Western Kentucky (5-3-2, 1-1 C-USA).
