SAN ANTONIO — Four Roadrunners reached double figure kills as UTSA held visiting UTEP to a .089 team hitting percentage en route to a sweep on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
For the sixth time this season, UTSA held an opponent to a sub .100 attack percentage. The Roadrunners outdid the Miners in all but one statistical category as UTEP totaled 10 team blocks to UTSA’s five.
Dajana Boskovic and Marijeta Runjic each registered 13 kills, while Jordan Kotara and Tessa Dahnert added 10 apiece. Kotara was one dig shy of a double-double with nine digs.
Setter Amanda Gonzales recorded her fourth consecutive match of 40-plus assists and Daniella Villarreal posted a career-best 25 digs.
In the opening set, each team traded points until UTSA (16-7, 7-2 C-USA) pulled away off three straight points to lead 9-6. The Roadrunners managed to hold more than a one-point lead through the remainder of the set and utilized a 6-0 run later in the frame to make it 23-13. Boskovic secured the win for UTSA off two of her 13 kills.
UTEP (7-17, 1-8 C-USA) held the advantage early in the second set as the Miners jumped to a 7-3 lead to force the Roadrunners to their first timeout. UTSA came back and rattled off its slow start on an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead.
The Miners did make a late comeback later in the stanza and tied the game at 19 but only managed to play a close game for four points. A miscue by the Miners handed UTSA set point and a kill from Boskovic secured the win.
The Roadrunners played another tough game in the third set as it featured six ties and three lead changes. Defense was on point in the third stanza as the Roadrunners recorded four of its five team block and Villarreal 13 of her 25 digs in that set.
No Miner reached double figures once again and were led by Dalainee Perry’s nine kills.
UTSA will hit the road for a pair of matches in the Sunshine State. The Roadrunners will match-up with Florida Atlantic on Friday, Oct. 30, and will follow that with FIU on Sunday, Nov. 1.
