Women?s basketball lends out helping hand at Methodist Children?s Hospital

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s basketball team visited with the patients of the Methodist Children’s Hospital on Wednesday and spent some time with the families of the children there in the afternoon.

The team enjoyed time with patients in the ICU, oncology and pediatrics surgery unit floors and even had craft time. The team also passed out souvenirs that included UTSA basketballs, water bottles, T-shirts, towels, pom poms and backpacks.

“The ladies visited our patients and families and gave out UTSA balls, bags, pompoms and more," said Vickie Knight, child life specialist at Methodist Children’s Hospital. “We want to thank them for their kindness and energetic spirit.”

The Methodist Children’s Hospital is the first hospital built from the ground up, exclusively designed to care for children in San Antonio and South Texas. The hospital offers outstanding services in many specialties, including pediatric heart surgery, pulmonology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, newborn and pediatric intensive care, oncology and emergency services.

“This kind of experience really puts one’s life into perspective," Director of Operations Emily Sherman said. "The children’s energetic personalities and high spirits are remarkable and they have touched and changed our lives in a way we cannot describe. You go into a situation like this and hope to impact someone’s life, but I think we were the ones who were impacted most. The team wants them to know to keep fighting, stay strong and that we’ll be thinking about them throughout the season."
