UTEP edges UTSA on Friday night, 1-0

SAN ANTONIO — Bri Barreiro scored in the 23rd minute and the UTEP defense was able to hold off several UTSA chances in the second half for a 1-0 win on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.

Rebekah Kensing led the Roadrunners (1-11-1, 1-4 C-USA) with three shots, while goalie Katherine Tesno collected three saves. UTSA outshot the Miners (9-4-2, 2-1-2 C-USA) 12-10, but could not find the back of the net.

Angela Cutaia sent a cross from the left side that Barreiro headed past Tesno in the 23rd minute for what proved to be the only goal of the match. Both teams finished the first half with five shots and the Miners took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

UTSA turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and produced several scoring chances over the final 13 minutes.

In the 79th minute, Channing Machen put a cross toward the net from the right side. Two UTSA players slipped past the defense, but neither could get off a good shot. Less than a minute later, another cross was sent into the box and Harper Luczka was able to get a head on it, but Alyssa Palacios came up with one of her seven saves on the night.

UTSA had one last chance in the 88th minute, when Kensing had a good look at a header that sailed just above the crossbar.

From there, UTEP was able to run out the clock and preserve the 1-0 shutout.

The Roadrunners will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a matchup at Southern Miss (3-8-3, 1-4 C-USA).
