UTSA sweeps Middle Tennessee in league opener

SAN ANTONIO — Marijeta Runjic and Dajana Boskovic registered double figure kills to lead UTSA to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Middle Tennessee Friday night at the Convocation Center.

UTSA (10-5, 1-0 C-USA) hit .292 for the match and outdid Middle Tennessee in almost every statistical category and held the Blue Raiders to a .179 attack percentage.

Runjic led all Roadrunners with 13 kills, to go with a .524 hitting percentage and three blocks.

Meanwhile, Boskovic tallied 11 winners with five digs and two blocks.

The visiting Blue Raiders (3-13, 1-1 C-USA) had a slow start to Friday’s match as the Roadrunners held them to a .037 clip in the opening set. UTSA jumped out to an early lead and didn’t let Middle Tennessee come within no more than two points.

Middle Tennessee turned the tables around in the following frame and played UTSA point-for-point until the end. The Roadrunners played from behind and eventually tied the score at 21 on a kill from Kylie Schott. Jessica Waldrip followed with a kill to put UTSA on top 22-21 but MT evened the score once again.

The Roadrunners scored on the ensuing play and ended up scoring the final three points of the set to win 25-22.

Both teams played closely in the third set and MT led UTSA once again until late in the frame. Eleven ties and eight lead changes later, the Roadrunners broke away on a block by Boskovic and Tessa Dahnert. The Roadrunners scored three of the last five points to win 25-23.

For the Blue Raiders, Miri Shade led all with a match-high 15 kills.

UTSA will return to the Convocation Center on Sunday, Sept. 29, when it welcomes North Texas at 1 p.m.
