Lozano loses sudden-death playoff, leads UTSA to fifth place at Lone Star Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by a runner-up finish from Zander Lozano, UTSA finished in fifth place at this week's Lone Star Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (7,247 yards/par 72).

Lozano entered the day in a tie for 12th place at 4-under-par after posting rounds of 72 and 68 on Monday. The freshman fired a 5-under 67 in the final round to vault all the way into a tie for first place with Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech at 9-under 207 through the end of the 54-hole tournament and the two players went to a sudden-death playoff to determine the individual title.

Both wrote down a par-4 on the first hole, No. 18, but Ronneblad’s birdie beat Lozano’s bogey on the par-4 10th to secure the crown.

Lozano recorded three birdies on the front nine during his final round and added four more en route to a 32 on the back as part of his season-best round. He finished with 17 birdies — second-most in the field — and played the par fives at an event-best 10-under. The Boerne Champion High School product also bettered his previous top finish of third at the Louisiana Classics earlier this month.

Garrison Lackey was the second-highest placing Roadrunner, tying for 28th with an even-par 216 (69-72-75). J.J. Lindsey tied for 31st with a 1-over 217 (72-71-74), while Brett Hogan and Bryce Alley rounded out the UTSA lineup in 38th (71-75-72—218) and 48th (74-70-76—220), respectively.

UTSA registered its fourth top-five finish of the season after posting an 11-under 853 (284-281-288). The Roadrunners finished ahead of UT Arlington (854), No. 44 Ohio State (862) and New Mexico State (863).

No. 12 Texas Tech captured the team title with a tournament-record 29-under 835 (275-274-286). Southeastern Louisiana was second (846), followed by UTEP (850) and North Texas (852).

Competing as individuals, Reed Stegall ted for 55th (71-70-81—222), Christian De La Cruz tied for 70th (76-74-76—226) and Trace Morrow tied for 81st (74-79-78—231).

The Roadrunners will return to action next weekend when they travel to Bryan to compete at the Aggie Invitational. The two-day tournament is scheduled to start next Saturday, April 4.
