LAREDO — Zander Lozano tied for 40th to lead UTSA to 14th place at the Border Olympics, which concluded Saturday at Laredo Country Club (7,375 yards/par 72).
Lozano posted a 4-over-par 220 to finish in a nine-way tie for 40th place in the 102-player field. The freshman from Boerne opened with rounds of 75 and 72 on Friday and closed with a 73 on Saturday that featured a pair of birdies on each side to finish as the top Roadrunner for the second straight tournament.
Bryce Alley was two shots behind Lozano and in a tie for 50th after carding a 69-77-76—222. Brett Hogan fought back from an opening 77 with back-to-back 74s to finish 72nd (227), while J.J. Lindsey and Garrison Lackey tied for 80th (72-75-81—228) and 85th (73-73-83—229), respectively. Reed Stegall, competing as an individual, also was 85th (74-75-80—229).
UTSA turned in an 887 (289-294-304) to take 14th, just one stroke behind Texas State (887). Baylor captured the team title with a 15-under 849, followed by Houston (852), Sam Houston State (857), UT Arlington (860) and Pacific (861) in the top five. Houston’s Blair Hamilton won the individual crown with a 9-under 207 (67-69-71).
The Roadrunners will return to action on March 23-24 when they host the Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
