Roadrunners in second after opening day of UTSA Oak Hills Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by Brett Hogan and Bryce Alley, who both are in the top 10, the UTSA men’s golf team is in second place after the first two rounds of the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational, which began on Monday at Oak Hills Country Club (par 71/6,765 yards).

Hogan is tied for sixth at even-par 142 and Alley is one shot back and in a tie for ninth to help put the hosts in title contention with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday.

Hogan, a junior from Calgary, Alberta, opened with a 73 but rallied in the afternoon with a 2-under-par 69, his fourth sub-70 round in his last three tournaments and the ninth of his career. His day included five birdies with four coming in the second round. Hogan is four shots off the pace set by Kyle Jones of Baylor (71-67—138), Logan Boatner of Sam Houston State (72-66—138) and Preston Stanley of Houston Baptist (66-72—138).

Meanwhile, Alley, a sophomore from Longview, wrote down four birdies en route to firing a 3-under 68 in round two that helped offset a 75, which also featured four birdies but eight bogeys, in the morning. The 68 marked his second sub-70 round in his last two events, the first a career-best 65 at Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational in October.

UTSA posted a 9-over 290-287—577 on Monday and sits five strokes behind Baylor, which carded a 284-288—572. Sam Houston State (582), Houston Baptist (582) and Wichita State (584) round out the top five in the 15-team field.

Garrison Lackey and Zander Lozano are tied for 23rd (72-74—146) and 32nd (72-76—148), while J.J. Lindsey rounds out UTSA’s lineup in a tie for 38th (73-76—149).

Reed Stegall, competing as an individual, was the low Roadrunner on the day. The senior from San Angelo is in fifth place at 1-under 141 after firing a 72 in the opening round followed by a career-best 69 that was highlighted by four birdies.

Christian De La Cruz is tied for 32nd (74-74—148) and Trace Morrow is tied for 71st (76-80—156) as the other two UTSA players competing as individuals.

The final round will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
