CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UTSA scored the final five points of the fifth set to remain unbeaten in Conference USA play on Sunday at Charlotte (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11).
UTSA (15-7, 11-0 C-USA) hit .409 in the final set and held Charlotte (13-15, 2-9 C-USA) to a .238 clip. The Roadrunners were hot out of the gates, as they jumped to a 4-1 lead forcing a 49ers timeout. Charlotte slowly made up the deficit and eventually tied the score at nine on a block by Marshae Bradbury and Britney Leigh Held.
Two more ties ensued before UTSA went on a scoring barrage and closed out the set with a 5-0 run. Dempsey Thornton and Dajana Boskovic combined for a pair of kills in the run while miscues by the 49ers ultimately gave the Roadrunners their 12th consecutive victory and 19th straight in league play.
Thornton was one kill shy of matching her season high with 21 kills and she also recorded her eighth double-double with 13 digs. Menwhile, Boskovic pitched in with a double-figure effort of 16 winners and 13 digs to go along with four blocks and a pair of helpers. Jessica Waldrip picked up her handed out at lest 50 assists for the second outing in a row and also matched a career high with four blocks.
UTSA opened up with its 13th first-set win of the season. The Roadrunners cruised to the win as they held its largest lead at the 16-11 mark on a Boskovic kill. Megan Slan gave UTSA set point on a kill while a Charlotte error finished the frame.
Charlotte controlled the second stanza from the get go despite the Roadrunners pulling to within two at the 20-18 mark.
UTSA took 2-1 lead in the third set but was unable to secure the match in four after dropping the fourth.
Irem Asci led three 49ers in double figures with 15 kills.
UTSA will begin a three-match home stand next Sunday, Nov. 2, against Southern Miss (18-9, 703 C-USA). First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
