EL PASO — The UTSA men's golf team is in first place after a school-record round of 21-under-par 267 on the opening day of Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational, which was played on Friday at Butterfield Trail Golf Club (par 72/7,307 yards).
The Roadrunners shattered the previous program-record round of 272 set at the 2003 Southland Conference Championship and they hold a five-shot lead ahead of New Mexico State (272), while UMKC (275), Kansas (276) and Nevada (277) round out the top five.
Four Roadrunners shot under 70, led by Bryce Alley's career-best 65. The sophomore from Longview registered five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 sixth and is tied for second, one shot behind day-one leader Isaac Merry of New Mexico State, who shot a 63. His 65 is just one stroke off the school-record of 64 set by Derek Steinbruck in 1990 and matched by Gibby Martens in 2002.
Brett Hogan and J.J. Lindsey both fired a 67 and are in tie for sixth in the 84-player field. Hogan, a junior from Calgary, posted four of his five birdies as part of a 32 on the back nine. Lindsey, a junior from Adkins, recorded six birdies — three on each side — en route to his career-low round.
Garrison Lackey is one shot behind in 15th after posting a 68. The senior from Weslaco had four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 second.
Zander Lozano, a freshman from Boerne, is tied for 30th after carding a 71, while Reed Stegall is tied for 67th after a 75 while competing as an individual.
Round two is slated to get underway Saturday morning.
