BRYAN — Led by a third-place finish from Brett Hogan, the UTSA men’s golf team claimed the runner-up trophy at the inaugural Miramont Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at Miramont Country Club (par 72/7,174 yards).
The Roadrunners entered the final round in fourth place after carding a 297 on Monday, a day that saw bad weather force tournament officials to shorten the event from 54 to 36 holes. On the strength of a 4-under-par 68 by Hogan, UTSA turned in its best round to par of the fall campaign with a 4-under 284 to vault into second place in the 13-team field, the program’s third top-five finish this calendar year.
The Birds’ 36-hole total of 5-over 581 put them behind only No. 43 Houston, which registered a 285-280—565, and comfortably ahead of Columbia (587), an NCAA regional qualifier last year. Louisiana-Lafayette, Rice, Sam Houston State and Texas State tied for fourth (588), while No. 42 Southeastern Louisiana (590), McNeese State (592) and Houston Baptist (595) rounded out the top 10.
Hogan opened with an even-par 72 on Monday, which put him in a tie for eighth place entering the final round. He wrote down a birdie on four of his first six holes on Tuesday and his sixth birdie of the day — a four on the par-5 18th — got him to six under and in a tie with Louis Kelly of Louisiana-Lafayette for first place. The Calgary, Alberta, native settled for a double bogey on his final hole — the par-4 third — and a season-best 68 to tie for third place at 4-under 140.
It marked the best finish of Hogan’s junior season and the second highest of his UTSA career behind a tie for second at the 2013 Rice Intercollegiate. He finished two shots behind Kelly, who turned in a pair of 69s, and one back of Houston’s Roman Robledo (72-67—139).
Garrison Lackey registered a season-best finish by tying for 17th after carding a 73-72—145. The senior from Weslaco led all Roadrunners and ranked second in the field with 11 birdies, including five in a row and six total during his final round, and he played the par fives at a combined five under.
J.J. Lindsey posted the second-best score of the day for UTSA with a 1-under 71 that was highlighted by four birdies. The junior from Adkins tied for 23rd overall, his top showing of the fall, at 3-over 147 (76-71).
Zander Lozano provided UTSA’s fourth score during the final round, a 73 that featured a pair of birdies. The freshman from Boerne tied for 30th with a 5-over 149 (76-73).
Bryce Alley tied for 47th (76-76—152) and Christian De La Cruz was 68th (80-76—156) while competing in an individual in his collegiate debut.
The Roadrunners will close out the fall campaign from Oct. 24-26 at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational in El Paso.
