UTSA sweeps UAB on Sunday for eighth consecutive victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UTSA hit .323 on Sunday en route to a 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 sweep at UAB.

The Roadrunners improved to 11-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Conference USA play with their eighth consecutive victory. Dajana Boskovic registered 11 kills, while Marijeta Runjic and Dempsey Thornton each added 10.

Jessica Waldrip aided the team’s attack percentage with 34 assists and Kylie Schott hit .625 on the strength of six winners on just eight attacks and she also had a career-high seven digs.

UTSA totaled eight blocks and edged the Blazers, 39-28, in digs, as it held UAB to a .092 attack percentage.

The Roadrunners hit .444 in the opening set and used a 10-2 to take a 22-11 lead after the Blazers (4-17, 1-5 C-USA) pulled to within two at 8-6. Thornton’s fourth kill of the frame secured the opening-set win.

UTSA held the Blazers to a -.030 attack percentage in the second stanza. UAB was able to stay close, but lost all momentum when the Roadrunners went on an 11-3 run. UTSA closed out the set by scoring six of the final eight points and took a commanding 2-0 advantage into the locker room.

There was no stopping the hot-hitting Roadrunners coming out of the break, as they rattled off a 9-2 run to force an early UAB timeout.

The Blazers managed to cut into the lead and they came within two at the 12-10 mark, but that was as close as they would get.

Leslie Ekpe paced UAB with 10 kills and eight digs.

UTSA will return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center on Friday, Oct. 17, when it hosts Western Kentucky (19-4, 7-0 C-USA) in a battle of the leagie's two undefeated teams. ​
