HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Led by a 20th-place finish from Zander Lozano, the UTSA men’s golf team finished in eighth place at the season-opening Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday at Hattiesburg Country Club (par 71/6,902 yards).
Lozano, a freshman from Boerne Champion High School, entered the final round in a tie for 28th place and he fired a 1-under-par 70 on the strength of five birdies to move into a tie for 20th in the 84-man field. He wrote down 10 birdies overall during the three-round tournament in his collegiate debut.
J.J. Lindsey registered UTSA’s low round of the event with a career-best 3-under 68 on Tuesday. The junior from Adkins recorded four birdies against just one bogey in bettering his previous collegiate best of 69 posted in the first round of the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Bryce Alley posted his third straight 72 and ended in a tie for 36th at 216, while Garrison Lackey and Brett Hogan, who each had an eagle on the par-5 17th today, tied for 51st (74-70-76—220) and 71st (80-71-75—226), respectively.
The Roadrunners carded a 1-over 285 in the final round and finished in eighth at 7-over 859 (288-286-285).
Southeastern Louisiana claimed the team title with a 16-under 836 (285-276-275), followed by Southern Miss (839), Louisiana-Lafayette (844), Mississippi (850), Sam Houston State (851), Louisiana-Monroe (855) and South Alabama (856). UTSA was one stroke ahead of Louisiana Tech (860). Mississippi State was 10th (863), followed by Rice (864), UALR (868), Tennessee Tech (875), Arkansas State (878) and Jackson State (909).
Southern Miss' Casey Fernandez tied the tournament record with a 14-under 199 (68-66-65) to capture the individual crown.
UTSA will return to action in three weeks when it travels to Erie, Colo., to compete at the Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational from Sept. 29-30.
