Hogan leads Roadrunners on first day of Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational

ERIE, Colo. — Led by a 1-under-par 71 from Brett Hogan, the UTSA men's golf team is in eighth place after the first day of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, which began on Monday at Colorado National Golf Club (par 72/7,771 yards).

On a day that saw the second round suspended twice due to lightning and for the evening due to darkness, and thus a cancellation of the third round, Hogan opened with a 71 and then played his first five holes of round two at even par. The junior sits in a tie for 13th with 13 holes left to play on Tuesday. Hogan registered four birdies — all on the back nine — and an eagle on the par-5, 696-yard 15th en route to matching his low score of the season in the first round. The Calgary, Alberta, is eight shots off the pace of 9-under set by David Oraee of host Colorado, but only one back of the top 10.

Bryce Alley is one shot behind Hogan after posting an even-par 72 in the opening round that was highlighted by three birdies. The sophomore from Longview played his first six holes of the second round also at even par and is tied for 24th with 12 holes remaining.

Garrison Lackey turned in a 73 on the strength of a trio of birdies and he equaled Alley by touring the first six holes of round two at even par. The senior from Weslaco is in a tie for 32nd (+1) in the 90-player field.

Zander Lozano matched Alley by posting a 72 in the first round behind four birdies — three on the front side — but he fell into a tie for 52nd after opening round by going four over on his first six holes. J.J. Lindsey is tied for 82nd after posting a 76 and playing the first five of round two at five over.

The Roadrunners are in eighth place after carding an even-par 288 in the first round and playing the second round at a combined four over. They are two shots ahead of Nebraska and Seattle, who sit in a tie for ninth.

Colorado leads the 17-team field at 15-under, followed by UMKC (-8), Denver (-4), San Diego (-3), Utah State (E), Houston Baptist (+1) and Towson (+1).

Round two, which will be the final round, will resume play at 10:30 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday.
