ERIE, Colo. — Brett Hogan tied for sixth place to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a seventh-place showing at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club (par 72/7,771 yards).
Hogan followed a 1-under-par 71 posted in the opening round on Monday with a 70 in the second and final round of the two-day event that was shortened to 36 holes due to lightning delays on Monday afternoon. The junior from Calgary registered four birdies — three on the front nine — en route to his low round of the season in the final round. Hogan, who recorded a trio of birdies and an eagle in the opening round and played the par fives at five under for the tournament, ended in a five-way tie for sixth place at three under in the 91-man field for the third top-10 finish of his UTSA career.
The Roadrunners turned in an even-par 288 in the first round and a 292 over the final 18 in placing seventh out of 17 teams with a 4-over 580. Colorado captured the team title with a 20-under 556 behind individual medalist David Oraee's 13-under 131 (63-67). San Diego (568), Denver (569), UMKC (574), Houston Baptist (579) and Utah State (579) rounded out the top six.
Bryce Alley was three strokes behind Hogan after carding a pair of 72s to tie for 22nd. Garrison Lackey posted a 73-74—147 to tie for 29th, Zander Lozano tied for 39th with a 72-76—148 and J.J. Lindsey was 74th (76-78—154).
UTSA will return to the course on Oct. 6-7 when they travel to Alabama to compete in the Jerry Pate National Invitational at Old Overton Golf Club.
