SAN ANTONIO — UTSA cruised to a 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 sweep against North Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (7-7, 3-0 C-USA) won their fourth consecutive match and were led by a trio of players that recorded double-digit kills.
Dajana Boskovic led the way with 14 to go with 10 digs and a pair of blocks, while Marijeta Runjic and Dempsey Thornton each tallied 11 winners,
UTSA hit .211 and held the Mean Green (10-5, 1-1 C-USA) to a .177 attack percentage. The Roadrunners also served up seven aces and Kylie Schott and Thornton each had a pair.
UTSA worked its way from behind each of the first two sets, winning each by identical scores of 25-22.
The Roadrunners went on a 5-1 run to draw the first tie of the opening set at the 9-all mark. UTSA battled its way through six ties before Runjic drew the final tie with a kill that made it 21 apiece. The Birds ended the frame on a 4-1 run, including a pair of kills and a block from Runjic.
The second was similar to the opening frame. A defensive miscue by the Mean Green evened the score at 17 and UTSA managed to score back-to-back points to take a 19-17 lead. Three more ties ensued before consecutive North Texas attack errors handed the Roadrunners set point. A combo block by Megan Slan and Jessica Waldrip secured the three-point win.
UTSA rode another hot streak coming out of intermission and began the third set with a 6-1 run to force a Mean Green timeout. The Roadrunners led by as many as nine at the 15-6 mark on a Slan kill. North Texas made a late run and even came within four on two occasions, but a hard-hit ball by Thornton fell in the middle of the UNT defense to secure the match.
Carnae Dillard paced the Mean Green with 13 kills and 12 digs.
UTSA will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Middle Tennessee (5-10, 1-1 C-USA) for a 7 p.m. contest.
