SAN ANTONIO — After opening Conference USA play with a sweep at UTEP on Monday, the UTSA volleyball team returns to the Alamo City to host a pair of matches this weekend.
The Roadrunners (5-7, 1-0 C-USA) will welcome Florida Atlantic to the Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. match on Friday before hosting North Texas at 1 p.m. two days later.
UTSA picked up a pair of C-USA weekly honors after winning two of three matches last week. Dempsey Thornton was tabbed the league's Offensive Player of the Week and Jessica Waldrip was named the circuit's Setter of the Week.
Dajana Boskovic is averaging four kills per set, which ranks third in the conference, to go along with 2.36 digs and 0.75 blocks per set. Meanwhile, Thornton is averaging 3.55 kills per frame, which ranks fifth. Waldrip, who has recorded at least 40 assists in the last five matches, is averaging 9.54 helpers per frame and she also leads the team with 16 aces.
Defensively, Annie Kunes’ league-leading 4.85 digs per set ranks 28th nationally. Megan Slan has totaled 43 blocks on the season and is averaging 1.25 blocks per set, which ranks fourth in the league.
Florida Atlantic (10-4, 1-0 C-USA), which has won four of its last five contests has been victoious in three sets six times this fall. In fact, the Owls only have lost one opening frame this season. FAU ranks fourth in the league in hitting percentage (.233) and second in opposing hitting percentage (.154).
Meanwhile, North Texas (9-4) will travel to El Paso before passing through San Antonio on Sunday. The Mean Green currently is on a three-match losing streak, but it has won two of its three road contests this year. Carnae Dillard leads North Texas with 5.42 kills and 3.24 digs per set and she is joined by Eboni Godfrey as the only players to tally more than 100 digs this season.
