UTSA to finish season-opening road trip this weekend at Marquette Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will finish up a season-opening eight-match road trip this weekend when they head to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Invitational. The two-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday and the Roadrunners will square off against Green Bay at 5 p.m. on Friday before taking on James Madison and event host Marquette at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., resepctively, the following day.

The Roadrunners enter the weekend with a 2-3 record and are coming off two losses at last weekend's Delta Zeta Classic at Texas State. UTSA fell in four sets to the 1-35 rival Bobcats before taking Wichita State to five sets.

Dempsey Thornton leads the team with 3.45 kills per set, which is third-best in Conference USA. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter also adds 0.91 digs and 0.27 blocks per frame.

Marijeta Runjic is adding 3.15 kills per set to the offense to go along with 2.05 digs and 0.40 blocks. Meanwhile, Kylie Schott is hitting a team-best .324 and has registered 16 blocks at the net. Schott is 10 blocks away from cracking into the top-10 of the all-time record books in total blocks.

Defensively, Annie Kunes leads C-USA with 5.54 digs per set. Over the weekend, Jordan Kotara posted career-highs in digs and blocks with 22 and five, respectively, and she is averaging 3.59 digs and 0.68 blocks per set.

The Roadrunners are slightly outhitting their opponents with a .171 attack percentage and that has been aided by Jessica Waldrip’s 9.77 assists per set, which ranks sinxth in C-USA.

UTSA's trek to Milwaukee will be a weekend of firsts, as each of its matches will be a first meeting against its opponent.

Green Bay has won just one of its six outings this fall, while James Madison is 4-3 and Marquette sports a 3-2 mark in the early going this seaosn.
