SAN ANTONIO — Richard Garrett Jr. broke his program shot put record for the third time this season and UTSA registered seven winning performances at Friday's Roadrunners Invitational.
Garrett Jr. recorded a measurement of 65-6 ¼ (19.97m) en route to a silver medal in his specialty event, but the senior All-American finished as the top collegian in the field of 13. The mark was an improvement of one foot and a quarter inch from his previous school record established at last Saturday's J. Fred Duckett Twilight in Houston and he now stands fourth on the national leaderboard. The Garland native went on to post his second consecutive victory (third of season) in the discus with a toss of 182-3 (55.55m), which was more than seven feet longer than his nearest competitor.
Phil Steinert made it a sweep in the throws when he was victorious for the third time this spring in the hammer following his throw of 187-8 (57.21m).
UTSA was just as successful in the evening's running events.
Nate Brunette clocked a time of 21.07 in winning the 200 meters, while Nathan Collier crossed the finish line first in the 1,500m (4:09.20).
Jonas Gutierrez won the 110m hurdles in 14.62 and Joshua Smith raced to a season-best time of 51.20 en route to gold in the 400m hurdles.
The Roadrunners' other victory on the track came in the 400m relay when Aaron LeJeune, Brunette, Darryl Wyrick and James Johnson passed the baton in 40.63, which was the team's best time of the year.
UTSA will take next weekend off before traveling to Houston for the Conference USA Championships. The four-day meet is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 15.
