SAN ANTONIO — All-American Keyunta Hayes raced to the nation's second-fastest 400-meter hurdles time at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Phil Steinert broke his program hammer record for the second consecutive weekend at the same meet and UTSA received three victories at Friday's Trinity Tigers Relays to highlight a busy weekend of action for the Roadrunners.
Hayes circled the Mike A. Myers Stadium oval in a season-best 50.36 on Friday night in a runner-up performance to Kansas' Michael Stigler, who crossed the line in 50.08. Both times were the fastest in the country this spring. The Tyler native qualified for the final with the second-best preliminary heats time, 50.73, in the 61-man field.
Meanwhile, Steinert added another three feet and two inches to his school mark in the hammer on Thursday at the Texas Relays. Conference USA's leader tossed the implement 203-8 (62.08m) en route to seventh place in the 25-man field. Teammate Richard Garrett Jr. was one spot back in eighth with a career-best throw of 203-1 (61.90m).
Mike Medrano (800m/1:53.80). Jared Tyler (discus/155-3/47.33m) and Saul Vasquez (5k/14:56.88) all picked up gold medals at the local Trinity Tigers Relays and that led a parade of seven podium finishes for the Birds.
UTSA will return to action at next week's Pepsi Florida Relays. The two-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Friday, April 4.
