UTSA sweeps North Texas for seventh win in eight Conference USA matches

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA improved to 7-1 in Conference USA play with a Sunday sweep of North Texas (25-23, 25-19, 25-12).

Preseason C-USA Player of the Year McKenzie Adams was the only player with double-digit kills for either team in the match, as she downed 17 to go along with 15 digs for her 16th double-double of the season. Annie Kunes had a team-high 17 digs and Jessica Waldrip quarterbacked the offense with 36 assists. Meanwhile, Tessa Dahnert and Lauren Muenchow combined for 15 kills on just 22 attacks.

UTSA (15-7, 7-1 C-USA) scored the first nine points of the opening set before the Mean Green rallied with a 10-4 run. North Texas (12-12, 4-4 C-USA) continued to chip away at the Roadrunners lead and eventually narrowed the deficit to one at 24-23, but Dempsey Thornton clinched the set with a kill from the left side to give UTSA a 1-0 lead. Adams had six winners and hit .308, while Waldrip delivered 11 assists and Dajana Boskovic accounted for 10 digs.

North Texas hit only .027 in the second set, which enabled the Roadrunners to break open a nine-all tie and close the frame on a 16-10 run. Adams racked up another seven kills and added seven digs to lead UTSA in each category, while Waldrip’s 13 assists paced the offense.

UTSA continued to press the action after intermission and it built a double-digit lead on their way to hitting .308 while stifling the North Texas attack. The Birds limited the Mean Green to a -.024 hitting percentage. Adams and Lauren Muenchow each tallied four winners and Annie Kunes collected eight digs to help finish off the sweep.

UTSA will embark on a three-match road trip that begins next Sunday, Oct. 28, at UTEP (11-7, 5-2 C-USA).
