Junior Elise Huskey recorded a combned 27 kills against Texas-Pan American and UTEP on Friday.

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA volleyball team split a pair of contests at the UTSA Classic on Friday at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners (3-6) earned their first sweep of the season after disposing of Texas-Pan American (25-13, 25-19, 25-12) before falling to UTEP in a five-set thriller (25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11).

Junior outside hitter Elise Huskey paced the Roadrunners in the two contests with a total of 27 kills. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore setter Kelsey Schwirtlich guided the UTSA offense with 70 assists and she posted double-doubles in both matches. Senior middle hitter Briana Mason helped on the defensive end with 11 total blocks.

UTSA (3-6) will conclude tournament play at 5 p.m. on Saturday against Davidson (4-3).


UTEP 3, UTSA (25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11)
UTSA fell just short of completing a perfect day at the UTSA Classic after falling to UTEP in five sets (25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11) on Friday night at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners (3-6) were unable to overcome 49 unforced errors against the Miners (6-3). UTSA tallied 34 errant attacks and 15 service errors in the five-set match. The Miners escaped with a perfect 2-0 record on the first day of competition after their wins against the Birds and Davidson.

Junior outside hitter Elise Huskey led the way for the Birds with 15 kills. Senior outside hitter Kendra Rowland and sophomore outside hitter Whitney Walls also were in double figures with 13 and 10 winners, respectively. Meanwhile, redshrt sophomore setter Kelsey Schwirtlich recorded her second double-double of the day with a match-high 48 assists and 17 digs.

Junior libero Kelsey Jewasko led all players with 26 digs, while Rowland recorded 11.

UTEP was led by Melissa Toth's 18 kills and 14 digs, while Patty Jarmoc posted a double-double of 44 assists and 11 digs. Stephanie Figueroa tallied a team-best 25 digs for the Miners. The Miners also benefited from 16 total blocks in the contest. Kyla Muela blocked nine UTSA attacks to lead the way.

The match saw 25 ties and 10 lead changes, including a thrilling second frame that featured 13 lead changes and five ties.


UTSA 3, Texas-Pan American 0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-12)

The UTSA volleyball team opened the UTSA Classic with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-12) win against Texas-Pan American on Friday at the Convocation Center behind a balanced offensive attack.

Junior outside hitter Elise Huskey paced the Roadrunners (3-5) with a match-high nine kills. Sophomore Andee Josserand notched eight winners while Briana Mason and Brittney Malloy recorded six apiece. Mason tallied a match-high in attack percentage by hitting at a .600 clip in 10 attempts.

Sophomore setter Kelsey Schwirtlich posted a double-double after recording match-highs in assists (26) and digs (12). Schwirtlich also guided the Runners offense to a season-best .299 hitting percentage.

Rita Gonzalez handed out 17 assists for the Broncs (1-8), while Kaitlin Vasquez collected 11 digs.

UTSA jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the opening set after kills from six different players. A 12-5 run by the Roadrunners would extend their lead to 21-9, capped off by a winner from Huskey. Holding a 24-10 lead, the Birds would need four set points, before finally putting away the Broncs as Huskey ended the frame with a kill. The Columbus native went on to post five winners in the set to lead the Roadrunners.

Texas-Pan American claimed an early 3-2 lead in a back-and-forth beginning to the second stanza. However, the Birds tied the set when Mason notched a kill off a feed from Schwirtlich. Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Walls recorded a winner following the next serve, which giving the Roadrunners the lead for good. UTSA then stretched its lead to 20-14 before the Broncs began to mount a comeback effort. Texas-Pan Am pulled within three points (22-19) before UTSA closed out the set on a 3-0 run.

The Roadrunners left no doubt in the third set after rushing out to a 7-0 advantage. UTSA pushed its lead to 14 (20-6) after Malloy registered her sixth kill of the match. The Roadrunners cruised through the remaining part of the set to claim their first sweep of the season.
