Freshman Phil Steinert broke UTSA's hammer record on Friday.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Freshman Phil Steinert's school-record performance in the hammer highlighted UTSA's final day of action at the USA Championships on Friday.

Steinert tossed the implement 185-9 (56.61m) in his third and final attempt of the morning to break Luke Johnson's four-year-old standard by one inch. The throw was not enough to advance the Round Rock native to the finals and he finished 13th in the field of 30 junior throwers. It improved his previous career best, a 170-11 (52.10m) measurement at the season-opening Trinity Open, by nearly 15 feet.

Meanwhile, four-time All-American Teddy Williams was unable to move on to the 100 meters final. The Tyler native clocked a 10.50 en route to a fifth-place finish in the second semifinal of the night., missing out on a spot in the eight-man final by a mere one hundredth of a second. Walter Dix won the event in 10.04.
