Junior Kyle Kaase established a new UTSA pole vault record on Saturday.
SAN MARCOS — Junior Kyle Kaase won the Texas State Invitational pole vault title with a school-record performance and added another gold medal in the javelin to lead the UTSA men's track & field team on Saturday.
The Spring native cleared 16-4 ¾ (5.00m) to eclipse Tommy Wolfe's year-old standard by two inches and he finished in a first-place tie with Henrique Martins (unattached) and Logan Cunningham (Texas State). Earlier in the day, he threw the spear 182-9 (55.71m) to win the event by more than four feet.
Meanwhile, freshman Richard Garrett Jr. won the discus with the fourth-best performance in program history. UTSA's indoor and outdoor shot put record holder launched the platter 164-1 (50.03m) to better his previous season best by nearly 12 feet. Fellow first-year thrower Phil Steinert earned a bronze medal with his toss of 157-7 (48.05m) and that stands fifth on the school's all-time performer list.
The Roadrunners received four other winning performances on the day.
Senior Teddy Williams crossed the tape first in the 200 meters (season-best 21.34), while junior Brandon Chiuminetta clocked a 1:53.99 in a gold-medal performance in the 800m. Junior Devon Bond leaped 6-8 ¾ (2.05m) to lead a UTSA 1-2-3 finish in his first high jump competition of the spring and freshman Adam Hebert won the long jump for the second week in a row when he broke the sand in 23-5 ½ (7.15m).
UTSA is back in action next Saturday, May 1, at the Texas Invitational in Austin.
